Noted academician Professor JK Joshi stressed on the need for understanding Himalayan intelligence in various aspects through space technology. He said this while speaking at a meet organised by Uttarakhand Space Application Centre (USAC) on the occasion of Himalaya Day here on Wednesday.
Addressing the gathering, Joshi stressed on the need for immediately starting efforts to understand and conserve the Himalayas.
The Himalayas are vital for the entire Indian subcontinent and beyond, he said.
He said that USAC should start working towards Himalayan intelligence so that an effective action plan can be drafted for conservation and management of the Himalayas.
Speaking on the occasion, USAC director Professor Durgesh Pant said that it is vital to preserve the Himalayas for sustaining human life.
Indiscriminate use of natural resources especially in the Himalayas will badly disrupt ecological balance.
He said, “It is important to preserve forest areas, natural water sources and to utilise our traditional knowledge in the present context. Constructions that meet scientific and environmental standards should be constructed in areas according to the sensitivity of the area in question.”
He exhorted USAC scientists to work with assistance from ISRO to study disaster and its possible causes along with developing an early warning system.
