PNS

The doctors of Gynaecology department and Interventional Radiologist of Mahant Indiresh Hospital claimed to have saved the life of a female patient.

The life of the patient had come under a serious threat because of Hepatitis-E and liver failure, the doctors said. During the treatment, 68 units of blood and blood products were transfused to the patient and the patient has been discharged from the hospital following her recovery, the doctors added.

During a press conference on Saturday, Dr Vinay Rai, medical superintendent, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital and some other senior doctors  informed that Meenakshi (24)  had been admitted at Gynaecology department of the hospital on  September 6.

As per the doctors, the patient, pregnant for eight months, had Hepatitis E and along with fulminant liver failure which was deranging her blood coagulation process.

Dr Anshu Sharma, assistant professor, Gynaecology department, Indiresh Hospital said that chances of liver failure are far higher in a pregnant women as compared to a normal women.

“Without intensive medical intervention, such condition can prove life-threatening.

There were two challenges that the doctors had to combat- one was stopping bleeding during labour and the other was to save the uterus of the patient so that her fertility is preserved. During the labour, the condition of the patient turned to be extremely critical due to excessive bleeding.

The patient was put on life-support system (ventilator in I.C.U.). But any kind of surgery would have been fatal for the patient.

In such a condition, the doctors decided to use the ‘Uterine Artery Embolization’ technique to control the bleeding.

The bleeding was controlled very soon,” Sharma said and added that it was for the first time that ‘Uterine Artery Embolization’ technique was applied at the hospital.

The doctors claimed that they had closed both the arteries supplying blood to the uterus sans any operation and soon the bleeding had been controlled.
