PNS

To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Field Marshall Philip Walhouse Chetwode, a seminar was organised at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) on Friday.

The Seminar involved talks on varied subjects related to the Field Marshall’s life and time in the Military. In the seminar the former Commandant of the IMA, Lt Gen ( retd)  K K Khanna , veteran of 1971 war Major ( retd) Chandrakant, Brigadier ( retd) S M Ismail, Col Arjun Dube and Lt Col ( retd) P P Tripathy delivered lectures.

The aim of the seminar was to acquaint the officers and Gentlemen Cadets of the Academy with the life and contributions of the Field Marshal in detail and drive home lessons for military life. The seminar also included reading of the original speech that Field Marshal  Sir Philip Walhouse Chetwode delivered on December 10,  1932.

The famous ‘Chetwode Credo’ of the Indian Army “the safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time Second, the honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next. Third, your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time” was given by Field Marshall Chetwode, the then Commander in Chief of British India on 10 December, 1932, when he addressed the ‘Pioneers’, which was the first course to pass out form the portals of IMA.

A communiqué of IMA claims that the main focus of the entire seminar pivoted around the military leadership traits exhibited by the Field Marshall and how the present generation of military leaders can learn from his military leadership.
