International wildlife crime syndicates have been exploiting the human-wildlife conflict scenario in Uttarakhand to goad villagers into killing wildlife including leopard, deer and wild boar among others. Observers point out that the human-wildlife conflict is causing considerable problems in various parts of the State with some areas seeing villagers abandoning farming and migrating due to damage caused by simians and other wild boar to farming. Though plans have been made by the department years ago for supposedly mitigating the human-wildlife conflict, no major improvement in the situation appears to have been achieved so far. As a result, farmers or villagers laying snares around farms and cattle-rearers poisoning carcass of their animal killed by a big cat are not uncommon occurrences in the state, says an activist.
