Higher Edu dept likely to reverse its decision

Under pressure from the association of college teachers of the State, the Higher education department could reverse its decision to decrease the summer vacation on Monday.

The college teachers are annoyed with the reduction of ten days in their summer vacation and have threatened to undertake work boycott from May 15. The work boycott call of the teachers has put the conduction of the examination of HNB Garhwal Central University and Sri Dev Suman Garhwal University in jeopardy.

A worried State Government intervened and asked the higher education department to sort out the matter with the teacher organisations. In a recent order, the State higher education department had asked the colleges affiliated with HNB Garhwal Central University to observe the summer vacations from June 1 to July 5. The order implies that the vacations of college teachers would be reduced by ten days this time as the duration of summer vacations is normally 45 days.

The Higher education director, KC Malkani told The Pioneer that a positive decision on the matter would be taken on Monday. He, however, declined to comment on the contents of the decision.

Malkani claimed that there is some misunderstanding on the issue as the department has not curtailed the vacations. The college and university teachers are entitled for a vacation of 60 days in a year.

The president of Garhwal University Teachers Association (GUTA), SK Tyagi, said the teachers’ body is determined to stick to its work boycott call from May 15.

GUTA, the association of teachers of government aided degree colleges affiliated to Garhwal University, had requested the higher education director to reconsider his decision to decrease the summer vacations.

Tyagi said the association has not received any communication from the department on the issue.
