In a public interest litigation regarding contamination of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, the High Court of Uttarakhand has sought replies from the Central and State Governments within two weeks. The petition was taken up for hearing by the division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice Ramesh Chandra Khulbe.

Delhi resident Ajay Gautam had written a letter to the High Court complaining about the rising contamination of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers while also stating that crores of Hindus have deep faith in these rivers.

Garbage is being dumped into the Ganga at various places with sewers also being drained into it. The case will be taken up for hearing next on January 11.
