GPS in all police vehicles likely

PNS

State Police department is mulling to introduce GPS (Global Positioning System) tracking mechanism in all the police vehicles. It will bring all vehicles under a single monitoring system. The new facility will be introduced to track the location of police vehicles during duty time. It will also help the police to scientifically locate the position of vehicles when they are exposed to attacks or accidents.

This would also check any misuse of any official vehicle. The system was already implemented successfully in the year 2008-09 but it could not continue for long time due to some reason. The proposal has been sent to the State Government for its nod, senior police officials said. Moreover, troubled by allegations of misuse and of not reaching a crime scene on time, the police department has decided to fix high-tech satellite guided tracking system in all its vehicles to track their movement.

“We are going to install GPS in all police control room (PCR) vans, Cheetah police vehicle so that they can be monitored round the clock and we can lessen the reaction time,” said State Additional Director General of Police (Administration) Ram Singh Meena on Friday. “We believe that by installing these devices, we will have better coordination among these vehicles because we can monitor their positions from the control room,” he added.

He said a special control room would be set up at the District Police headquarters to monitor these vehicles. A proposal has been sent to the state government regarding same and he hoped that this proposal would be approved soon by the State Government. Another police officer said the GPS-fitted motorcycles would be pressed into service for effective patrolling under an Internet-based monitoring system in the districts to curb street crime like snatching and robbery. One has to open the portal and after entering password, he can see where the patrolling bikes are.

He said, “We would be able to know if the staff is misusing a vehicle or not patrolling in the specified areas.” The arrival time of the van at any crime location can be decreased by a few minutes.  The installed GPS devices will feature equipments like GPS receiver, modems, accessories, GPS transmission equipments and mobile data terminals to facilitate complete communication between the vans and police. The devices will tell about the positions of vehicles to a master control room of state police. Since, the location of a PCR van is always available it can be deputed easily wherever any crime happens, the police officer added.
