Govt mulls 'plebiscite' on dress code in colleges

PNS

The State Government is planning to hold a ‘plebiscite’ among the varsity students before implementing dress code in Government colleges of the State.

After the end of the current phase of elections in colleges, students would be asked to give their opinion on whether dress code is to be implemented in their college or not, said Higher education Minister, Dhan Singh Rawat here on Sunday.  He said the dress code would not be foisted on the students. He informed that voting would be held in the colleges after the student union elections and consent of students on the dress code would be obtained. The Minister disclosed that the dress code would be implemented in the college only when more than 51 percent of the students give their consent for it. He said students would decide the type of attire and colour in the dress code and dress would be different for different classes.

The statement of the Higher Education Minister and his willingness to take the opinion of students on it is assumes significance as Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of BJP, had recently expressed its opposition on dress code for the students. The Government wants to inculcate a sense of discipline and uniformity in the college campuses by implementing the dress code for the college students. Incidentally, the Government has also planned to get away with the ceremonial  cloak and cap in the convocation ceremonies.
