Chief Minister Harish Rawat is personally monitoring the scheme as he considers it as one of the flagship social security measure of his Government. The scheme covers an entire family of the eligible persons with an insurance cover of Rs50,000. The MSBY covers 1,514 diseases and the Government is now planning to extend the cover to Rs2 lakh.The State Government bears the cost of the premium levied by the insurance company.
However, the poor preparation by the department for the scheme is reflected in the fact that despite the CM announcing the scheme on January 26, the department was in sleeping mode till days before launch of scheme on April 1.The department worked on frantic pace on the scheme after rebuke from the office of CM and in the ensuing frenzy to complete the work, the cards were made by coping the information from electoral rolls which ensured that cards of large number of ineligible persons was also made which are being recalled now.
