Cases of miscreants defrauding the common people using myriad means are on the spiral in the city. In one of such cases reported from the city on Wednesday, a cheat escaped after snatching 100 grams of gold items.

Cantt Police Station SSI CC Naithani said Shivam Jewellers owner Shivam Singhal has lodged a written complaint. As per the complaint, a person who claimed himself as a doctor of the locality had called him up and said he was willing to purchase gold chains for his daughter and daughter in-law.

The same person had asked him to send a staff of the shop to come outside his clinic near Kishan Chowk with five or six gold chains. Accordingly, a woman staff reached the place. However, a person came and decamped, snatching five gold chains worth around Rs3 lakhs.

Taking cognisance of the complaint, a case under appropriate sections of IPC has been registered against unidentified persons in the Cantt Police Station. Two teams were formed and they are working from several angels to crack the case, he added.

In recent two such incidents reported under two different police stations in the city, the miscreants barged into the homes of two elderly women in Nehru Colony and Cantt area and looted valuables after drugging the women.

Observers said with such cases growing in the state capital, the district police are unable to arrest the culprits and instill fear of the law in the potential miscreants. Police must be more on their guard to prevent such crimes, they said, adding that lack of police patrolling is emboldening the criminals.
