With modest facilities at their disposal the ophthalmologists of the associated hospital of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) here have successfully conducted surgery on a female patient suffering from a rare type of eye cancer. The 38 year old patient was diagnosed with Ocular Surface Squamous  neplasia (OSSN), in which abnormal, growth on surface of eye occurs.

The patient Sumitra Rana, a resident of Vikasnagar was having pain due to a peculiar outgrowth in left eye from quite some time. The doctors initially were not able to diagnose the disease and referred her to the associated hospital of GDMC.  Here the patient was examined by Head of Department of ophthalmology Dr Sushil Kumar Ojha. He told the Pioneer that the patient was diagnosed with OSSN and it was found that the mass had a very high degree of vascularisation due to which it was increasing rapidly. A team of doctors conducted first of its kind in any government facility in Uttarakhand.

“On examination we suspected carcinoma in situ or mild malignant change tumour. Prognosis explained and excision biopsy with 2 mm clear margin excision done. Bare Sclera left in view of suspected malignancy. The excision biopsy confirmed malignant change with invasion,’’ he said. After the operation, the patient was advised to go under post operatively topical chemotherapy. Dr Ojha said that six cycles of Chemotherapy are scheduled to be given to the patient and now after three cycles there is no sign of recurrence of growth.

The husband of the patient, Sardar Singh Rana was all appreciative of the effort of the doctors. He said that the family could not afford the high cost of operation in private hospital. The success of doctors of the medical college hospital could be gauged from the fact that eye department suffers from shortage of facilities. The department also has shortage of doctors and the patient load on the doctors is very big.

The Principal of the GDMC, Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta, the director Medical Education Dr Ashutosh Sayana and the Medical Superintendent (MS) of associated hospital of GDMC, Dr K K Tamta have congratulated the team of the doctors involved in the unique operation.

The team of doctors involved Dr Sushil Kumar Ojha, Senior Resident (SR) Dr Manu Bharadwaj, SR Anshika Kashyap and nurses Renu and Sushma.
