The doctors at the department of ophthalmology of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital here have claimed to perform a complex eye surgery on a female patient.
The head of department of the ophthalmology at GDMC hospital, Dr Sushil Ojha said that Sanjeeda , 47 Year female patient, a resident of Nagina in Bijnor district off Uttar Pradesh (UP) was brought before him with at Eye OPD with severe Syblepheron, a condition where the cornea gets attached with eye lids. In the patients of this disease, the sight is affected due to limitation of lid movements which obscures the visual axis.
“Patient came for second opinion to GDMC as she was advised a four step surgery which included symblepharon release with forbid reconstruction and cataract surgery with penetrating Keratoplasty. In private hospitals the cost of the operation is about Rs one lakh,’’ he said.
It is pertinent to mention here that Sanjeeda, the patient belonged to a poor family as her son works in welding shop as a labourer.
Dr Ojha said that a team of Eye specialists of GDMC hospital decided to do surgery in view of complexity of her problem.
“ On Tuesday first part of the surgery was accomplished successfully which included release of Syblepharon and reconstruction of lower fornix.
The next surgical steps will be done after two months of satisfactory post operative course,’’ he quipped.
Expressing happiness on successful operation, the medical superintendent (MS) of the GDMC hospital Dr K K Tamta said that the hospital is rising up to high expectations of patients.
The Principal of the GDMC, Dr Ashutosh Sayana said that the basic purpose having Medical College in the provisional state capital is to provide high quality treatment and act as a tertiary health care centre. He said that the hospital is catering to the required expectation. Dr Sayana however added that a tier system of referral should be set in place so that only difficult cases are referred in the GDMC hospital. He congratulated team of eye specialists headed by Dr Sushil Ojha for the operation.
