Garbage strewn around as MCD, Waste Management firm lock horns

PNS

The differences between the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun and the Doon Valley Waste Management company have continued.

Dehradun Mayor Vinod Chamoli pulled up MCD sanitation supervisors and suspended one for negligence on duty but the level of sanitation in the State capital is still far from satisfactory. Moreover, the people state that they are fed up of the authorities unable to either resolve their disagreements or facilitate the desired level of sanitation.

With the MCD failing to make much headway, on Friday, Dehradun district magistrate BVRC Purushottam held a meeting with MCD and DVWM officials and directed them to ensure that the garbage strewn around the town in cleared within two days in view of coming festivals. In the meeting, Rajpur Road MlA Rajkumar said that the MCD had 24 vehicles for lifting and dumping garbage but of these only seven are working.

He said that the remaining vehicles should be repaired and deployed so that the desired level of sanitation can be achieved. DVWM officials informed that due to improper condition of the approach road to the municipal trenching ground, the vehicles sent to dump garbage there are taking longer than usual which in turn is making it difficult to pick up garbage regularly from all the designated spots in the city.

Responding to this problem, the DM talked to the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority secretary who agreed to facilitate the construction of about 200 metre road to the trenching ground. Stating that work on this road will begin soon, Purushottam said that MCD and DVWM will deploy one JCB each at the trenching ground so that the path can be cleared of garbage and the garbage being brought by vehicles can be piled separately.

The DM said that in case of requirement for more JCBs, these will be provided but stressed that garbage should not remain strewn on the roadsides and public places in town. The DM has had to hold this meeting in the view of the deteriorating condition of civic sanitation in Doon as the MCD and DVWM blame each other for the problems responsible for this State of affairs.
