One sub-inspector and three constables of City Patrol Unit (CPU), constituted to penalise traffic violator and check crime, were arrested in Kathgodam of Nainital district on Saturday for their alleged involvement in looting of `7.94 lakh cash from a businessman. The victim identified as Anuj Aggarwal is native of Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh). The incident had occurred on Thursday, Kathgodam Police station in-charge Sanjay Kumar Pandey told The Pioneer on Saturday.

He said that CPU personnel had stopped the businessman for checking in Kathgodam area on September 17 and told him to show the relevant paper related to the cash he was carrying with. Aggarwal told the policemen that he used to supply gold items in hilly districts. He secured `7.94 lakh cash by selling gold items. He would provide relevant paper later on.

Instead of following legal formalities, CPU personnel snatched the cash from him and fled the spot. Anuj came to Kathgodown Police Station and narrated the incident to the police officer on Saturday. He registered a case under Sections 394/120b/411/342 of IPC against CPU Sub-inspector lalit and constables Ganesh, Virendra and Chandra of Kathgodam police post.

Pandey said that acting on the case, the accused policemen were arrested and they will be sent to jail after being presented before the court.

A fleet of CPUs was formed by State DGP BS Sidhu in April 2014 to enforce traffic regulations and act as quick response team to crack down on crimes like chain-snatching, eve-teasing and other offences in the city. CPU personnel were selected based on their physical and interview test and they had undergone training on policing and traffic rules.
