FIRs sought in cases of 'illegal' cow slaughter

The commemoration of Eid ul Zuha went off peacefully in the State though animal activists have complained of illegal cow slaughter and violation of High Court orders banning ritual sacrifice in any place except a registered slaughter house.

PFA, Uttarakhand, has applied to the Dehradun SSP seeking registration of FIRs in three separate cases of illegal cow slaughter and also sought FIRs against the Dehradun CO (City) and a sub-inspector for allegedly abetting criminal violation of the Uttarakhand Cow and its Progeny Protection Act 2007 and helping remove evidence of illegal cow slaughter at a site in Dehradun.

PFA Uttarakhand member secretary Gauri Maulekhi had recently written to Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar, citing a 2011 High Court order allowing animals to be killed only for human consumption and that too only in a registered or licensed slaughter house in areas under the purview of urban local bodies.

Citing the HC order, she had requested the CS to ensure that this order was not violated by slaughter of animals in public places.

On Eid ul Zuha, PFA received information about cows being slaughtered near the Inamullah building on Gandhi Road. In her application to the SSP Maulekhi States, “We reached the area and informed the police present at the site but they refused to act. No action was taken even after CO (City) HC Sati reached the site and we were stopped from entering the lane where bovines were being slaughtered.

Bovine slaughter is a punishable offence under the Uttarakhand Cow and its Progeny Protection Act 2007 while abetting it or hiding evidence of such crime is also a crime under the IPC.”

Submitting a video along with the application, she states that Sati and sub inspector RK Rawat reached the site late after being informed, refused to accompany the witness to the slaughter site, informed those involved in the crime to help them remove evidence and failed to carry out their duty.

She has requested that FIRs be lodged against these two police officers and unknown butchers. Additionally, applications have also been submitted to the SSP for lodging FIRs against unknown persons for illegal bovine slaughter in Kunja Grant under Vikasnagar police Thana and in Khushalpur village under Sahaspur Thana.
