As expected, the Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Government Institute of Medical Science and Research Srinagar (Garhwal) has failed to attract medicos for the posts of the faculty members. In the recent recruitment drive for contractual appointments for the posts of seven professors, 12 associate professors and 26 assistant professors, the college managed to select just 12 doctors for faculty positions.
The principal, Srinagar Medical College, Dr C M S Rawat said that 37 candidates had appeared for the interview out of whom the board selected three professors, three associate and six assistant professors.
The names of the selected candidates have been sent to the state administration for final approval, he added. Interestingly, the college managed to select one professor of Radio diagnosis while no candidate appeared for the post of assistant professor in Radio diagnosis.
It is pertinent to mention here that the college, set up in 2008 to provide medical facility to the people living in the Garhwal hills, has a very dismal track- record of faculty retention. The college has 99 posts in faculty out of which 33 are at present lying vacant. The efforts of the state administration to provide highest salaries and special allowance too have failed to thaw the ice in the college faculty.
Meanwhile, during the walk- in- interview held to fill 17 vacant posts of assistant professors on Monday, the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) has selected eight candidates.
The principal GDMC, Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta said that two assistant professors each in Gynaecology and Community Medicine have been selected while one assistant professor each in Anesthesia, Pathology and blood bank has been selected. He further informed that the college has sought direction from the state administration to fill the vacant reserved posts of assistant professors in the college.
