linking technology to growth, Padma Vibhushan Prof MM Sharma on Friday appealed to the scientific community to come out with innovative technologies since technology is the biggest sea of capital. Nobel laureates underlined the fact, attributing it to growth of developing as well as developed nation.

Delivering a lecture on ‘Innovation in Chemical Industry’, organised at Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) to mark celebration of the National Technology Day, Prof Sharma said, “Technology is the biggest sea of capital. Growth of developed as well developing nation has been attributed to it by renowned economist of the world. So, there should be serious efforts to bring innovative technologies.”

He gave the history of various technologies which changed the entire history of the world, like technology of polystyrene which led to polyester clothes, technology of butadiene which changes the lifestyle of people with the synthetic rubber.  It led to a total change in our transport system i.e. tyres are manufactured and used for transportation.

He laid stress on the need for the industry to adopt techniques which eventually led to the successful implementation of many technologies, these will result in substantial improvement in turn over and financial advantage in different sectors of industry as petrochemical, pharmaceutical and petroleum refining.

Professor Sharma, the former director of Institute of chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai, strongly objected over use of term “innovation” in general research. He said the term is term innovation is being used loosely.

Dr MO Garg, Director IIP, in his welcome address commented on the technological capabilities of India. He emphasized on the need for the development of cutting edge technologies which have low cost of operation and are environment friendly.  He showed concern over the rising prices of crude oil and its availability.

Dr SK Sharma said that technology day gives an opportunity to derive inspiration and strength from our past achievements, to critically review our present position and to plan for the future for developing the cutting edge technologies. Surendra Kumar, Administrative Officer proposed vote of thanks.
