Poor supply of drinking water has been adversely affecting normal life of the people at Haldwani’s Kedarpuram area for past month. The tube-wells catering to the people in Kedarpuram area remain mostly mal-functional thus creating crisis for the people to meet their daily drinking water requirements. “We have already taken up the problem with the officials concerned,” said Rohit, a resident of Kedarpuram. Though the officials concerned of the Jal Sansthan have assured to restore the water supply soon, nothing has been done for the past one month, he said. The matter of concern is that there is not a single day when one part of Haldwani city or the other does not face drinking water woes, despite Haldwani having adequate volume of drinking water.
Unlike many other areas, Haldwani region has plenty of drinking water in store. According to the officials concerned of the Jal Sansthan, Haldwani, while availability of the drinking water in Haldwani remains about 35 million liter per day (MlD), the demand for the same is only around 28 (MlD) even during the peak hours. It thus shows about seven MlD being in surplus. Besides, Jal Sansthan has also installed tube-wells in many parts of the urban as well as the rural parts of Haldwani. Yet, the drinking water scarcity continues. This is because of the delay in replacing over four/ five decade- old drinking water distribution system of the Haldwani region and poor storage capacity. More so, excessive dependence on tube wells only compounds the drinking water woes. With one of the tube -wells stop functioning, it takes more than a fortnight to get it restored, as the officials concerned maintain. Though the officials have assured to restore the supply soon the citizens are far from being assured.
