life in the once tranquil Dehradun appears to have become more stressful of late considering the fact that at least 250 suicide cases have been reported here in the past three years.
Two suicide cases were reported in the past two days in the State capital. MKP (PG) College Psychology department head Anuradha Singh said that inability to accept failure, financial loss, academic disappointments, loss in self-esteem and relationship failures are among the main reasons for rising cases of suicide. Counseling could help those with suicidal tendencies overcome stress, confusion, self-doubt and pressure, she added.
Dehradun SSP PRO Mahipal Singh Rawat said that a total of 254 suicide cases comprising 88 by females have been reported since 2010 in the state capital. Fifty three suicides including 19 by females were reported in 2010, 80 including 27 by females in 2011, 91 including 34 by females in 2012 and 30 suicides including eight by women were reported this year in the different police stations of Dehradun.
Rawat further said that a suicide case was reported from Race Course area on Friday morning. Forty-six-year old divorcee Ravi Kashyap was a taxi owner and lived alone at his home in Race Course. According to neighbours, due to financial loss in business, Kashyap was tense for the past many days which could be one of the reasons for his suicide though no suicide note was found. He further said that a doctor who was deputed at MlA transit hostel, Race Course committed suicide on Thursday. As per suicide note, death of his wife last year in a car accident was one of the reasons for his suicide.
A class X student had recently committed suicide as his mother told him to study instead of watching TV. An IIM student committed suicide as his mother rejected the woman he wanted to marry. In two separate suicide cases, two college going students committed suicide because their father did not buy expensive mobile phones for them.
According to Singh, teenagers and youth are becoming vulnerable to suicidal tendencies as they are unable to cope with the fast life and fail to meet the pressure of academic disappointments, relationships in their families or outside and inability to accept failure. Such stress can be sorted through proper counseling, she added.
