The doctors of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital have successfully carried out a complex brain surgery on a patient. The 46-year-old patient, a resident of Tehri was recently admitted in the hospital with symptoms of paralysis.
This patient had developed a cyst in brain after an accident. The patient after examination by the doctors of department of neurosurgery was advised an immediate operation. The Principal of the GDMC, Dr Pradeep Bharati Gupta who also is an accomplished neurosurgeon led the team of doctors in the marathon operation lasting for more than five hours.
Dr Gupta told The Pioneer that the cyst got converted into tumour and had dissolved the tough bone of head and it was further pressurising the membrane of the brain.
He said that after the surgery the patient is now out of danger and recovering. The Principal said that the operation was very complex and for the first time such brain surgery has taken place in a Government set up in Dehradun. What makes the feat more commendable that some prominent private hospitals refused to operate the patient considering his condition. The patient, a driver by profession was treated free of cost in the hospital. Apart from Dr Gupta, neurologist Dr DP Tiwari, anesthetists Dr Deepika Tiwari, Dr Hema Saxena and Dr Atul were part of the team which conducted the surgery.
This complex brain surgery comes close on heels of a rare surgery of eye by the ophthalmologists of the hospital. This 38-year-old patient was diagnosed with Ocular Surface Squamous Neplasia (OSSN), in which abnormal, growth on surface of eye occurs.
The Head of Department of ophthalmology Dr Sushil Kumar Ojha led a team of doctors that performed the complex surgery. After the operation, the patient was advised to go under post operatively topical chemotherapy after which no signs of recurrence of growth reported.
These operations are commendable considering modest facilities at the Doon medical college hospital and the huge patient load on the doctors of the hospital.
