Docs blame lifestyle for rise in osteoporosis cases

PNS

If you are having a tough work schedules and stressful life and frequently skipping your meal with low intake of calcium then it is better you prepare adopting a healthy lifestyle as soon as possible to avoid any fractures.

If we are asked to believe what medical officers say the poor lifestyle has started proving fatal to the residents of the capital city as several cases of osteoporosis are being reported and diagnosed by the doctors on regular intervals. Medicos warn that elderly citizens and women are among the worst sufferers, who fall into the clutches of osteoporosis. Medicos warn that most of the patients do not have any idea about osteoporosis until a fracture occurs. The worst part of osteoporosis is that the bone becomes porous and fragile. The decreased bone mass is seen due to the loss of calcium, which causes bone to become weak, brittle and more vulnerable to the fractures.

The diagnosis of osteoporosis can be made using conventional radiography and by measuring the bone mineral density (BMD). The OPD figures of Doon Hospital clearly highlighted that the out of every five person, three are suffering from osteoporosis with the majority of women. Among the primary symptoms of osteoporosis are backache, gradual loss of height and an accompanying stooped posture, low back pain, hunched or curved back, neck pain, tooth loss etc. Doctors say that like any organ in the body, human skeleton too needs a balanced diet containing both macronutrients (energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) for its normal development and maintenance.

Expressing concerns that women are more prone to osteoporosis, Dr SK Tyagi, a senior physiotherapist at Doon Hospital, says that the increased risk of falling associated with aging leads to fractures of the wrist, spine, and hip. “Although genetic factors largely determine whether an individual is at the heightened risk of osteoporosis, lifestyle factors such as good nutrition and regular exercise play a key role in building strong bones during youth, and helps to slow down bone loss in adults and the elderly,” he said, and further added that it is a silent disease and does not display any symptoms for decades until bone fractures.

Dr Tyagi strongly recommends more intakes of milk and other milk products to meet with the demand of calcium in the body. He says that despite the fact the women are more prone to osteoporosis elderly men can also easily become victim due to smoking or excessive alcohol intake, poor diet and less physical exercise. Dr Tyagi further says that osteoporosis patients should also do exercise but only after consulting the doctors and adds that the risk of osteoporosis fractures can be reduced with lifestyle changes.
