The much-awaited letter of Permission (lOP) for the Doon Medical College (DMC) arrived finally in the office of the Principal on Thursday. The college would now be able to give admissions to 150 students in the Ist year MBBS course from this year.
The Principal of the DMC, Dr Pradeep Bharati Gutpa confirmed the receipt of lOP. He congratulated the members of the staff of the DMC who worked dedicatedly for making things possible. Dr Gupta said that the DMC would be a boon for the people of State capital and neighboring areas as best medical facilities would be available in the college. The admissions of students in the new college would be done from the NEET examination.
Decks were apparently cleared for the issuance of lOP for DMC last month when the college authorities submitted an undertaking to the Medical Council of India (MCI) to remove some discrepancies pointed out by it.
The undertaking was handed over to the MCI by the Principal Secretary Health, Om Prakash and the Principal of DMC, Dr Pradeep Bharati Gupta in New Delhi on May 13. Work started at a rapid pace in the second half of last year when the state government appointed Dr Ashutosh Syana and Dr Pradeep Bharati Gupta as Director Medical education department and Principal of DMC respectively.
The Doon hospital and Doon women hospitals which earlier were district hospitals were merged in the DMC so that the precondition of a 300 bed hospital of MCI is fulfilled. The academic and administrative blocks of DMC were constructed at Dehra Khas area of the city.
The first team of MCI visited the hospital in the month of January this year. This team listed 27 shortcomings in the hospital and college its report to the MCI. After compliance of these shortcomings the DMC sought a re-inspection of its facilities by the MCI. The apex body of medical education sent a second team in the first week of last month based on the report of which the lOP for the college was issued.
