After a spell of tumultuous days, which resulted in closure of colleges, both the DAV and DBS PG colleges reopened on Wednesday. However, the activists of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhayarthi Parishad (ABVP) burned the effigy of State Government in protest against its educational policies in the DAV college campus on the day while in neighboring DBS college student leaders continued their relay hunger strike.
In the DAV PG College, the activists of ABVP engaged in slogan shouting against the State Government before burning an effigy of the State Government. The president of the student union Rakesh Singh Negi said that students scoring 70 per cent were not able to get admission in the college this year due to flawed policy of the State Government.
He said that the State Government has made no plans for the higher studies of the left out students. Meanwhile, the general secretary of the students union, Sachin Thapliyal continued his silent protest on Wednesday while being admitted in the Doon Hospital. The Agriculture and Medical Education Minister Harak Singh Rawat met Thapliyal in the hospital and inquired about his health.
The general secretary got injured on October 30 following police action on a group of students when they were trying to prevent College Principal Devendra Bhasin from entering the college. Thapliyal is now demanding action against the police officers involved in the use of force on the students. Harak Singh Rawat called up the Senior Superintendent of Police of Dehradun and asked him to expedite the case.
It is worth mentioning that the student union of the biggest college of the State was on a warpath with the college Principal as it charged him for many irregularities in the college. The Principal, on the other hand, had steadfastly denied these charges. The student leaders were adamant not to allow the Principal in the college, which resulted in a tensed situation in the college. On Tuesday, the Principal was requested by the district administration to keep away from the college for few days.
In the neighboring DBS College, the student leaders are engaged in similar agitation against the Principal O P Kulshrestha. The students allege that the principal’s role in giving out of turn admissions to four students is proved so he should resign immediately. The students here too have vowed to stop the principal from entering the college. A showoff was expected on Wednesday but it was averted as the principal decided to take leave on the day.
