Crimes rising due to slack verification, patrolling

PNS

The dearth of verification drives and inadequacy of police patrolling is leading to an alarmingly spurt in crimes in the state capital. With verification not being done in right earnest, Dehradun has turned into an ideal haven for the hardened criminals from western Uttar Pradesh. They keep committing crimes and escaping thereafter from the scene unchallenged by the law enforcers. Statistics reveal that most of the burglaries, loot, murder and other crime cases are linked to criminals hailing from western UP.

State Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Ram Singh Meena said five teams have been formed to solve the burglary case that had occurred in Balawala area on Wednesday morning. These teams have been deployed at various places across western Uttar Pradesh and they are directed to get into touch with the Special Operation Group personnel from western Uttar Pradesh districts who deal with burglary cases there.

Meanwhile, in Raipur, (Adhoiwala), a property dealer Sanjay Kumar Nagar who was himself a criminal with several cases being tagged to him was shot dead in the broad daylight by three unidentified persons on January 31. He had shifted from Delhi to Dehradun two years ago. The real name of Sanjay Kumar Nagar was Anil and several cases against him were registered in various police stations of Ghaziabad, Noida and Delhi. In a murder case of 2005, he was sent to jail and came out from the jail on parole in 2007.  It was clear from this instance that for the hardened criminals like them, Dehradun proved to be a safe hideout.

Another instance buttressing the point can be cited here. In Patelnagar, a property dealer Dharampal who had shifted from Baghpat to Dehradun four years ago was shot dead at the doorstep of his house by two unidentified persons on Wednesday. Dharampal was also known to be involved in many shady land deals.

Moreover, a 30-year-old Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) native Anuj Singh who had been absconding from Uttar Pradesh police committed suicide by shooting himself with his gun in his in-law's home located at Jakhan (Rajpur) in Dehradun on January 15. Few days ago, Babita, resident of Mothorawala, registered a complaint, stating two persons had forced into her home during day and decamped with gold chain and rings worth Rs one lakh.

Critics opined that lack of verification of the Dehradun residents, especially those coming from various parts of the State and from across the country appear to be abetting crime in the district. Armed persons without license or having licenses from other states keep moving around the State capital and other parts of the plain districts with police having no clue. The rise in incidents of crimes, including robbery, loot, burglary and snatching, in the State capital in recent days has shown that fear of the law is not much of a deterrent for the criminals operating across the city. This has exposed the inherent weakness of police to deal with such cases and provide security to the residents of the State.

Dehradun SP City Ajay Singh said, "We admit that verification of the residents, especially of those coming from various parts of the State and from across the country are not being rightly done by the police. Verification drives are being conducted from time to time. It is, however, a continuous process. local residents should also co-operate with the police too in having the identities of their tenants verified at the local police stations. It will take some more time to complete the verification of the residents in the district".
