Cop's wife alleges torture, seeks action

PNS

A 22-year-old wife of a policeman charged on Monday that she was being subjected to mental and physical harassment by her husband for years and demanded legal action against him, who is identified as Hemant Rawat.

Hemant is currently posted at Uttarkashi, she said.

Addressing a Press conference here, the woman, identified as Radha Rawat, said that Hemant had initially refused to marry her despite exploiting her sexually for over three years.

She claimed he married her only after she made a complaint to senior police officers at Garhwal Range in February, 2016 and said torture, both mental and physical were being inflicted on her since the day he had been forced to marry her. She further said she had approached Mahila Police Helpline, seeking justice, but to no avail.

“life turned hell for me with my husband torturing me in inebriated state. Things became more difficult as he left me one morning. The house owner sought the rent, but I was not in a position to pay him with my husband having disappeared. later, I came to know that he was transferred to Uttarkashi,” she said.

She further said no action had followed despite a complaint being lodged in June, 2016 at the Range office and a case under Sections 498a, 323 of IPC being registered in Kotwali Police Station. “With police refusing to lend me a helping hand, I was forced to approach court under Domestic Violation Act. I am frightened now as Hemant keeps on threatening me,” she added.
