Haridwar police enforced section 144 of CrPC and deployed additional security force in Roorkee Tehsil for the second day on Monday following communal tension that erupted on Sunday.
The Haridwar police had imposed section 144 of CrPC and deployed additional force in Roorkee Tehsil on Sunday to diffuse the communal tension that erupted after a 30 year man and 28 year old woman belonging to different communities got married with the family members of the bride opposing this marriage.
Police on Sunday had prevented a mahapanchayat being organised by one of the communities and detained over 50 people including BJP workers as tension ran high in the village.
The police had released all the detained persons on Sunday late evening after the situation improved.
Police sources said that the situation in the village and nearby areas was tense but under control.
The incident also came at a time when the annual Urs festival is underway at the Piran Kaliyar dargah of Sufi saint Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir Kalyari.
State Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Ram Singh Meena reached Roorkee along with Deputy Inspector General of Police Amit Sinha and other police officers on Sunday and took stock of the situation there.
He directed the police officers to take necessary steps for diffusing the communal tension and bring the situation under control.
While talking to The Pioneer Meena said that situation in Roorkee Tehsil is under control and police are vigilant.
The police have been directed to take action against persons taking law in their hand. An FIR has been lodged under IPC sections 153-A, 147, 148, 149, 188, 353 and 7 Criminal law Amendment Act against five named persons and other unidentified persons in the Roorkee police station, said SP (Rural), Haridwar, Ajay Singh.
Sources said that man and woman who married six months ago are highly qualified and were running their own private educational institutes at Roorkee and Bhagwanpur in Haridwar district.
The bride had disclosed her marriage to her family members two days ago and her family members opposed this marriage because the groom belongs to a different community.
Tension erupted when families of both the man and woman accused each other for the situation and local political leaders planned to organise a mahapanchayat over this issue.
The police acted quickly to prevent a repeat of the communal riots in Muzzafarnagar in Uttar Pradesh in August last year. Haridwar SP Rural Ajay Singh said that the situation in the area is under control.
Police have limited role to play in this marriage because both man and woman are adults and mature enough to decide what is best for them, he added.
