Cops crack 230 Online thefts from accounts

PNS

Uttarakhand Cyber Crime Police Station has been receiving considerable numbers of complaints related to illegal net banking transactions since its inception. Such cases are on the rise in the State for the past few years. Statistics reveal that around 230 such cases have been cracked by the cyber crime police station personnel and they have recovered around `10 lakhs from the fraudsters.

A police officer claimed that people are being cautioned through various mediums to stop receiving anonymous phone calls seeking information related to their bank accounts and ATM card details. “Despite this, such cases are on the rise in the State,” he added.

Another police officer said that complainant should inform the police station soon after they come  to learn that money is siphoned off  by unidentified persons through illegal net banking transactions. The chance of recovery of the withdrawn money is bleak  if  the complainants delay  informing the police about the same, he said.

Uttarakhand STF SSP P Renuka Devi had said that such complaints are being received at Cyber crime police station regularly. Team members verify mobile phone numbers and take steps to crack  such cases.

Mobile numbers are obtained from telecommunication outlets by the fraudsters  who flaunt  through fake identity cards.  Such things are happening daily in the Maoist- infested areas in Jharkhand and some other States. They make phone calls from far- away places from  where they actually reside in. They also change their locations frequently after making phone calls to evade being identified.

Some suspected mobile phone numbers received from the complainants are being given to the TRAI for further investigation.
