Heads of State women Congress from different district zones came together on Sunday demanding due representation of party women in the State Assembly. They strengthened their voice for women representation in mainstream politics. The former State woman commissioner and present State Congress women’s wing in-charge proposed by Narendra Modi’s Government in Centre to bring Women’s Reservation Bill in lower house of Parliament to mark the International Women’s Day.
A meeting was held at Desh Rakshak in Kankhal by rural Mahilla Congress president Monika Jain along with other heads of Roorkee and Mahanagar. Addressing the party leaders, the State women Congress president Sarita Arya said, “Uttarakhand mahilla pradhan rajya hai (It is mainly women’s State). Apart from launching women focussed schemes towards women empowerment, the congress party leadership must think over giving at least 25% representation to women in State Assembly.”
Speaking to The Pioneer, State women Congress vice president and in-charge of State women Congress wing Dr Santosh Chauhan said, “It will be the best gift to women on International Women’s Day if Modi Government can bring the Women Reservation Bill in the lok Sabha. At Panchayat level 50% reservation for women candidates already exists but at the lok Sabha level there is only 12% representation of women while the fact is that 50% of the country’s population is contributed by the fair sex. This imbalance needs to be corrected.”
The State women Congress wing in-charge also demanded that in the State Assembly Budget, more of women focused schemes must be launched. Among other senior women congress leaders were present Ishwari Devi, Anju Dwivedi and Rashmi Choudhary of Roorkee.
