Cong takes out torch rally

Alleging violation of the Indian Constitution by the Union Government in imposition of President’s rule in Uttarakhand, Congress members took out a torch (Mashal) rally in the State capital on Monday evening.

leading the protest demonstration, the Pradesh Congress Committee president Kishore Upadhyay said that by orchestrating its conspiracy to bring down the elected government of Uttarakhand under Harish Rawat as chief minister, the BJP led Union Government had assaulted constitutional and democratic provisions.

He accused the prime minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah of having orchestrated the removal of the elected government in Uttarakhand, as it had earlier stirred up political instability in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Bihar. Maintaining that the Congress was in a majority position in the Vidhan Sabha, Upadhyay condemned the imposition of president’s rule in the State.

Imposition of the president’s rule is not based on sound grounds, he said. The elected State government was brought down and replaced by president’s rule mainly because BJP leaders had become insecure considering the popularity of the Congress-led government and feared a defeat in the 2017 Vidhan Sabha elections.

The Congress has approached the Uttarakhand High Court on this issue in order to prove the constitutional validity of its stance challenging the imposition of president’s rule, he added. Various PCC office bearers and workers were among those who participated in the demonstration.
