A fracture in a high risk patient was successfully operated in a 54 years old kidney failure patient who is on daily peritoneal dialysis, has a stent in the heart and is suffering with multiple medical problems.
The female patient who was on daily peritoneal dialysis since last two years had sustained a humeral shaft fracture for which she consulted many doctors who refused to carry out surgery considering her high risk from anaesthesia and surgery. Dr Gaurav Sanjay who operated upon her said that such patients are high risk due to chronic kidney disease and other pre-existing diseases.
But such fracture cannot be managed non-surgically and even after good surgery the possibility of delayed and non-union exist due to their deranged bio chemical metabolism and hormonal disturbances.
He said that the Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine and Maternity Centre routinely conducts many high risk surgeries like difficult joint replacement, complicated spine and neglected fracture and tumour surgeries.
