The 57 metre- long bailey bridge on Gangotri highway which had collapsed on April 1 has been opened to the people on Friday after being repaired by the BRO officials. The bridge is supposed to be enjoying strategic importance in view of its location in the vicinity of the Indo-China border. Notably, the bridge had collapsed just three months after it was constructed in January. The collapse of the bridge which link Indio-China border area with Gangotri left both the Army and the common people who used the bridge to go to the district headquarters, inconvenienced. The people residing in villages like Asi Ganga, Upla Taknaur and Nald Kathur under Bhatwadi block who faced the maximum brunt of the bridge collapse said that they are relieved by the bridge being put into place again as the pilgrimage to Gangotri is already on. The Indian Army and ITBP personnel facing difficulties too to collect provisions, an alternative bridge had been earlier put into place by the BRO personnel.
The district officers informed that the materials required in the repair had been brought from Pathankot and Joshimath. They said that it took a week for the collapsed bridge being repaired.
The Uttarkashi superintendent of police Dadan Pal said that the bridge has been opened for the people on Friday noon. “This is an important bridge of the region and so the BRO officials were busy in putting into place the repaired bridge,” he added. It can well be written here that this has been a great and fantastic work from ITBP personnel who had faced a lot of difficulties in resurrecting the bridge and which was causing lots of inconvenience to common people.
