Chief Minister Harish Rawat paid tribute to the nation’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary on Tuesday. The CM paid floral tributes at the statue of Nehru installed at the Nehru ward in the old jail in the State capital. Remembering Nehru, the chief minister called him a messenger of world peace. “His contribution to the development of a modern India cannot be ignored while his part in the Indian struggle for independence was also vital. While giving a new direction to the socialist movement in India, Nehru also created new opportunities by facilitating the establishment of industries,” said Rawat.
The CM also exhorted the public to follow the tenets observed by Nehru to build a strong nation and work against divisive forces. Accompanying the CM, Rajpur Road MlA and parliamentary secretary Rajkumar said that Nehru had been imprisoned four times in the Dehradun jail by the British between 1932 and 1941.
Informing the CM about anomalies at the Nehru ward, the parliamentary secretary said that the officials concerned have remained apathetic towards the condition of this site with even regular cleaning not being ensured. The idols and murals here are covered in dust. He demanded that a library and museum of Nehru’s items be made here. The CM assured the necessary action would be taken in this regard soon.
