City Patrol Unit (CPU) would be extended to three more cities — Kashipur, Rudrapur and Roorkee — in the State to control traffic. The unit is presently working in three cities — Dehradun, Haridwar and Haldwani.

Speaking of the extension of the unit to new cities across the State, DGP MA Ganapathy said on Thursday that it would go a long way in easing traffic congestion. Besides, he said that the police officers should enhance their skills to cope with the changing pattern of crimes with the criminals becoming tech-savvy. He further said that a training institute for police officers will come up in Dehradun soon to enhance their skills to deal with cyber- related cases.

While addressing a police seminar in Haldwani, Ganapathy stressed on qualitative improvement of the investigations.

Kumaon DIG Ajay Ratula and Nainital SSP Sweety Aggarwal were also present.

DGP said that those to be deployed in Kashipur, Rudrapur and Roorkee are being trained in Dehradun. “They would be sent soon as the training is nearing completion,” he said, adding that the funds recently released by the state government for the police department would help them go for some infrastructural overhaul.

He further said that in view of upcoming Assembly election, list of the police officers who have been working at a place for three years, is being prepared.  “They would be transferred once list is prepared,” the state’s top cop said.

The senior cop while addressing the seminar expressed concern over illegal mining going on unabated in some parts of the state. They said they must be more alert to stamp out the menace. What is more, vigilance department officers would soon submit a report on the policemen facilitating illegal mining activities. Based on the report, action would be taken against the errant cops.
