While dwelling on her focus as the vice- president of the Child Protection Commission, Uttarakhand, Vijyalaxmi Gusain said that her top priorities are development in the realms of health and education aside from providing family to the orphans and stopping their exploitation in the form of child labour. She assumed charge on May 19. “I have been working tirelessly since I assumed charge. I have interacted with several NGOs engaged in child development around the capital like Shishu Niketan and Nanhi Duniya” she said while addressing a press conference in Dehradun on Wednesday. She thanked the Chief Minister Harish Rawat for reposing confidence in her. “I would do everything to do justice to the trust,” she said.
“It is a pity that a large section of the people is still unaware of several rights that are enshrined in the Constitution. It is our duty to make them aware so that they can fight for them when they are threatened,” Gusain said. "The officials concerned take steps to ensure that the children are adopted according to the procedure. They check the backgrounds of those who want to adopt. Even after adoption it is now mandatory to check every five or six months to make sure that the child thus adopted is not exploited," she said while quizzed over the adoption process involving the institutions that facilitate the same.
She stressed on hosting fairs and fetes for the under- privileged children and celebrating Children’s Day adequately across the state. lauding the role of the media, she said they are playing a crucial role on the matter. “We reach out to the people at large through the media on the matter of making the people aware of the fundamental rights and of means to stop child exploitation,” she said.
Every district should have a court for addressing issues related to children and the homes for the orphans and the poor, she said, adding that she along with her colleagues and the media would act on these matters. The authorities will have to work together to set up such institutions for child development, especially in areas like Haridwar and Dehradun, she added. Problems faced by the schools working to ensure better education for such children will also be solved. Among others Anita Pant, Deepak Dheeman, Ashish Gusain, Mahesh Narayan, Chandra shekhar Joshi, JagMohan Rawat and Kuldeep Singh lalkar were present.
