The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) provides an account of emerging issues due to climate change and a base to prioritise actions by the Governments. Keeping this in mind, IPCC, Climate Development and Knowledge Network (CDKN) supported by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office and Central Himalayan Environment Association (CHEA) with the collaboration of Uttarakhand Forest Department and Forest Research Institute (FRI) will organise an event titled Uttarakhand AR5 Outreach High level Public Event on Tuesday at FRI and a university outreach programme on March 11.
CDKN has an ongoing partnership with the IPCC to promote the uptake of the AR5 findings with Governments of developing nations. In India, CDKN organised a national outreach set of activities in 2014 in partnership with the Ministry of Earth Sciences utilising a regional summary of AR5 titled ‘What’s in it for South Asia’.
Now, CDKN in collaboration with Uttarakhand Forest Department and CHEA will try to reach new audiences in the State. Dr Youba Sokona, IPCC Co-Chair Working Group III and Coordinator African Climate Policy Centre will give the keynote address at the event on Tuesday while IPCC authors Prof G Bala from Indian Institute of Sciences and Dr Akhilesh Surjan from Kyoto University, Japan will share the recommendations of assessment reports. Uttarakhand Assembly speaker GS Kunjwal will preside over the event with State Forest and Environment minister Dinesh Aggarwal as the guest of honour.
The panel of IPCC authors will draw out the main findings of the report which are relevant to Uttarakhand.
The event is being planned in a manner so as to extract the most useful information that can be helpful in future governance and planning in the state. As a part of outreach an event for research scholars and university students will also be organised on Wednesday at Doon University to give students an opportunity to interact with the IPCC authors and experts.
