The authorities here have set up a closed circuit television camera network at the main intersection in Chamba town to keep a tab on traffic violations and penalise defaulters.

Apart from keeping a tab on traffic rule violators, the CCTV cameras will enable the police to keep an eye on all those arriving in or leaving the area.

It is pertinent to mention here that Chamba town is considered to be important especially as the central point of the Tehri district. Thousands of people and vehicles pass through or arrive in Chamba on a regular basis.

With traffic congestion becoming a regular feature of Chamba, the police have now resorted to utilisation of technology for tackling traffic congestion while also maintaining an alert eye on the situation. With the assistance of the Nagar Panchayat, the police have set up a network of four CCTV cameras at the bypass chowk here.

According to official sources, the CCTV camera network will not enable 24 hour monitoring of the Rishikesh Road, Uttarkashi Road, Mussoorie Road and the New Tehri Road at the intersection here.

The police are also making preparations for facilitating e-challan using the CCTV cameras. On the basis of the CCTV footage, the authorities are planning to serve challans through the regional transport office at the homes of those found violating traffic regulations here.

No-parking boards have also been erected by the police in the major localities of Chamba town to further tackle anomalies in traffic regulation.

According to the Chamba police station officer DS Chauhan, the CCTV camera network will maintain 24 hour monitoring of the bypass chowk. This will facilitate the required improvement in the traffic regulation in the area. Additionally, preparations are also being made to start the e-challan system in the near future, added the Chamba SO. The Chamba Nagar Panchayat head Vikram Singh Panwar said that the CCTV cameras had been installed at bypass chowk in response to demand communicated by the police. The installation of CCTV cameras is also being planned at Gabbar Singh Chowk and this is expected to be facilitated in the near future, added Panwar.
