Ahead of polling for students’ union election in DAV (PG) College, candidates and their supporters campaigned to woo the voters in the college campus on Wednesday. Some candidates and supporters distributed general knowledge books with the cover displaying the candidate’s name, photograph and election manifesto among the voters violating lyngdoh Committee recommendations.

The election officer Dr Gopal Kshetri claimed, “We have made all the arrangements for conducting this polling peacefully in the college.” The polling will be held between 9 am and 2 pm on Thursday.

Being the last day before the polling, all the candidates and their supporters left no stone unturned to woo voters. Candidates and their supporters used several methods while canvassing within the campus. Some supporters had pasted printed posters of their candidates on T-shirts and made several rounds of the college campus raising slogans in favour of their candidates.

NSUI supporters distributed general knowledge books with the cover displaying the candidate’s name, photograph and election manifesto among the voters. The number of candidates’ supporters in campus was higher than voters in the college. College staff remained mute spectators while lyngdoh Committee recommendations were blatantly violated.

Police had made elaborate security arrangements within the college campus and the city. To maintain law and orders within the campus, two circle officers including Mussoorie CO Jaya Baloni and Dalanwala CO MS Farswan, Dalanwala police station inspector CS Bisht, sub-inspectors and constables were deployed there. SP city Jagdish Chandra made several rounds of the college to check the situation.

CO Baloni said that dozens of sub-inspectors, two PAC platoons, 100 head constables and constables, commandos and others will be available on polling day. One entry gate and two exit gates have been made in the campus and students will be allowed entry only on showing identity card.

The college staff were busy in giving final touches to preparation ahead of polling. Kshetri said that for peaceful conduct of the election, the college campus has been divided into four zones while 22 booth stations have been made out of which 10 booths for girl students.

According to him, no candidate was issued notice for violation of recommendations because no one had registered any complaint against any candidate. A total of 24, 750 voters will exercise their franchise in this election. The counting of votes will begin from 9 am on September 6 and election’s result is expected to be declared by evening on the same day, he added.
