By-election for Chamoli district panchayat president on Nov 5

PNS

The State Government has issued notification for the by-election for the vacant pos of the president of the district Panchayat of Chamoli on Monday. The elections would be held on November 5 and the counting of the votes and declaration of result would be held on the same day.

Issuing notification, the secretary in-charge of Panchayati Raj department, Ranjit Kumar Sinha set November 1 as date of nomination while the scrutiny of nomination papers would be done on the same day and the candidates can withdraw their nomination papers on November 3.

The by-election for the coveted post of the three-tier panchayati raj system was necessitated after Munni Devi Shah had resigned from the post.

Shah had been elected as the president of Chamoli district Panchayat in 2013.  However, she became an MLA from Tharali Assembly constituency on BJP ticket in the by-election necessitated by the death of her husband Magan Lal Shah who had  died of dengue in January this year.

After her election as MLA, Munni Devi had initially refused to resign from the post of the president of the district Panchayat.

This had even delayed her oath taking as the MLA. Things had come to a head when the vice-president of  the district Panchayat, Lakhpat Butola demanded her resignation and moved Uttarakhand High Court ( HC). This had prompted  Munni Devi  to quit.
