Border traders manage to register impressive growth in exports

Rajendra S Markuna

India may not have been able to match its basic infrastructural growth with that of China along the Himalayan border in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh area, traders associated with the ancient India-Tibet border trade have registered an impressive growth in their business by raising the export level to the neighbouring country significantly this year as compared to total import of goods defying all odds i.e. poor road connectivity coupled with devastating monsoon this season. Whereas India imported goods worth Rs 81,58,303 from Tibet this year, the traders managed to export goods worth Rs 12,993,817 to the neighbouring country under this India-Tibet border trade that is conducted through India-Tibet border every year from June to October end.

But it may be recalled that the aforesaid ancient trade could be started much later i.e. after mid July this year on account of adverse weather conditions. Yet the traders turned things into their favour reversing the business growth trend which had been tilted to the neighbouring country for many years so far.It is worth mention here that in recent years it is the first time when export to China under this India-Tibet border trade has gone up this year as compared to import. Even during previous year, as the officials concerned of the India –Tibet border trade in Pithoragarh inform, the export remained less as compared to import. While the traders managed to export goods worth only Rs 18, 38,606 during the year 2012-2013, the import was recorded worth Rs 88,44,695 in the same year -2012-2013, said P S Kutiyal, a senior official of the India-Tibet border trade, Pithorgarh, while talking to The Pioneer.
