The birth anniversaries of two legends — the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and the former Prime Minister lal Bahadur Shastri were celebrated with due solemnity  across Pauri district on Thursday.

Tributes were paid to them in all the Government and non- government offices. The Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan was launched with people taking pledges for maintaining cleanliness.

Besides, a ratha yatra was taken out to make the people aware and to motivate them rightly on cleanliness and sanitation from the district headquarters Pauri. The chief development officer and in- charge district magistrate Sonika showed the green flag for the ratha yatra.

Addressing the gathering in the Collectorate premises at Pauri, Sonika emphasised that the true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi would be paid by making India clean.

Every citizen should participate in the movement launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mark the birth anniversary of the Mahatma. Sonika said the movement should start from the residences, mohallas and towns. One must shed pride to be part of the movement, she said.

The people who gathered there took the pledge and vowed to make it a people’s movement.

Notably, the cleanliness awareness campaign started in the district from 25 September and would end on 19 October.  All the educational institutions and the departments have been given strict instruction to keep them clean.
