Banking work was affected with employees of nationalized banks going on strike as part of the nation-wide strike in the support of their demand for increased pay.
Bank employees under the banner of United Forum of Bank Unions congregated at Parade Ground here and from there took out a rally that passed through Rajpur Road and Darshanlal Chowk before returning to Parade Ground. At the protest site, the UFBU coordinator Jagmohan Mendiratta said that the demand for increasing the salary of nationalized bank employees had been submitted in a memorandum to the Indian Banks’ Association two years ago.
The employees had gone on strikes, staged demonstrations and submitted memorandums to elicit the focus of IBA on their demand. However, the government and IBA are citing increasing Non Performing Assets in the banks to reject the demand.
The bank employees have been eliciting the focus of the government on the increasing NPAs of the banks but due to a corrupt nexus the authorities have been unable to ensure recovery of bank loans from defaulters.
