Ayurveda, homeopathy, HIV centres in DMC hospital may irk MCI

Gajendra Singh Negi

Presence of wings like Ayurveda, Homeopathy and HIV centre inside the campus of associated hospital of Medical College (DMC) here could prove an ‘Achilles heel’ for the hospital administration during the ensuing visit of team of Medical Council of India (MCI).

These wings and section though are part of a district hospital are not present in an associated hospital of a medical college. The MCI team is likely to visit after the festival of Holi and based on its report the decision regarding grant of the all important letter of Permission (lOP) to DMC would be taken by the apex body of medical education in the country.

The Ayurveda and Homeopathy wings are occupying considerable space in the hospital and in all probability the visiting team of the MCI could get irked by their presence in the associated hospital of medical college.

It is pertinent to mention here that the associated hospital of the DMC was a district hospital before it was transferred to the medical college to fulfill the obligation of having an associated hospital with a minimum capacity of 300 beds.

The hospital was transferred to the medical college but these wings are continuing to work inside the campus. Apart from these two wings the hospital also houses an Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) centre for the Acquired Immunity Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patients similarly some space is also occupied by NGOs working on AIDS and child development.

It is learnt that the hospital administration had requested the State Government to shift these wings and offices out of the hospital as erstwhile district hospital is now part of medical college.

The Principal of the DMC, Dr Pradeep Bharati Gupta told The Pioneer that the administration and entire staff of the hospital and college are at present busy preparing for the visit of the MCI.

He said that the matter of shifting these wings would be taken up after the inspection of MCI. Dr Gupta however added that the state government had to take a final decision on shifting of these wings. It is learnt that the Principal of the college do not want to antagonize the staff members working in these facilities by recommending their ouster from the campus as they could create trouble during the visit of MCI team.
