Around 56,000 farmers in Dehradun district incurred losses due to crop damage following the unseasonal rain being reported for the past two months. The district administration had deployed lekhpals and patwaris to evaluate the damages suffered by farmers due to rain.
Dehradun additional district magistrate (finance) Pratap Singh Shah said that around Rs2.75 lakh were distributed among about 9,600 farmers in the form of compensation through lekhpals and Patwaris. Around Rs3.78 lakh has been distributed among 168 involved in horticulture in the district, he added.
Shah said that as rain continues in various parts of the district, the survey for the crops damaged in the calamity is underway and according to inputs received till April 18, 62 per cent of crops have been destroyed.
The compensation is being given in such a way that if 43 per cent or more of total crops in the field got damaged due to unseasonal rain, the farmers would get the fixed amount of compensation per acre.
The farmers are being given Rs13,500 per acre in irrigated land area while Rs6, 868 in non-irrigated land area in the State. The farmers would get at least Rs1,000 for their crops damaged in the calamity, he added.
The compensation is given to the famers once survey for the crops damaged in the calamity is completed by the lekhpals or patwaris.
Earlier on April 16, Dehradun district magistrate Ravinath Raman had pulled up the sub-divisional magistrates for failing to submit reports on the quantum of losses incurred by the farmers due to crop damage following the recent spell of unseasonal rain.
