Admissions to colleges: Hearing in HC on Aug 7

PNS

Students who aspire to get admissions in various Bachelor degree courses in Dehradun-based government and government-aided- colleges — DAV (PG) College, DBS (PG) College, MKP (PG) College and SGRR (PG) College — are awaiting the Uttarakhand High Court's fresh order to the State Government regarding admissions. This matter is set for hearing in the HC on August 7.

In compliance with the earlier High Court order, the State Government had directed the Government and government-aided colleges affiliated to HNB Garhwal University to allow admissions on sanctioned seats on various Bachelor and Post- Graduation degree courses.

However, with the leaders of various students' groups going on the path of stir against the cap on admissions on various degree courses, the Chief Minister Harish Rawat seemed to have succumbed to pressure and directed the colleges to follow last year's admission process this year too. CM Rawat also stated that the State Government would submit a supplementary affidavit in the High Court, challenging its

order regarding admissions on sanctioned seats in the

colleges.

later, the Government had submitted a supplementary affidavit in the High Court and HC had appointed a senior advocate as court commissioner with an instruction to submit a report over the issue after meeting the college principals, students' leaders, University officials and others.

The Court commissioner had accordingly gone to the DAV (PG) College and met the college principal Devendra Bhasin, representatives of the college teachers' association and the university officials on July 28.

With things remaining murky, the students, leaders of various students' groups, college principals and government officers are now awaiting the Court's fresh order slated to be issued on August 7 over admissions in the colleges.

As last year, all the students who had applied for admissions were allowed to enroll on various degree courses this year too. Now, the students who aspire to get admissions in these colleges keep gathering in large number at the college campuses to enquire from the college officials when the process of admission will begin.

Notably, admission process in MKP (PG) College began only to be abruptly stopped as the college principal Indu Singh had not implemented the caste- based reservation policy in the merit list for admissions in various Bachelor degree courses. She withdrew the merit list, saying that the admission process in the college would begin after High Court clears the air about admissions.

Moreover, the university had not allocated seats on various Bachelor and Post- Graduation courses to MKP (PG) College. In view of this, the university inspection committee members had visited the college on Sunday and reviewed the college's infrastructure and the posts of teaching and non-teaching staff members among

other issues.
