Even after 24 hours, the district police are still clueless of the accused, Shameem, who escaped from police custody on Thursday evening, giving the cops a slip. The search is on, says the senior superintendent of police. Heads rolled as two cops have been suspended in connection with the escape.

However, incidents like these have put the police on the backfoot when not just the notorious criminals but small time robbers are also escaping police custody, making a mockery of the efficacy of the police custody. The latest happened on Thursday night. During regular patrolling a day before, on Wednesday, the civil line police had arrested the suspect and recovered a knife from him. A case was registered against him under section 25 of the arms Act. He was brought to the civil hospital for medical check-up on Thursday night and  escaped from police custody after deceiving the cops.

Speaking to The Pioneer, SSP said, “We have suspended Inspector Yogendra Bhadauria and constable Dharmendra in connection the matter and we have forwarded the report to the commandant with home guard Atar Singh becoming the witness. Photo of accused has been passed on to all the police stations and the hunt is on. He would be recaptured soon.”

According to police, inspector Bhadauria along with constable Dharmendra and home guard Atar Singh had brought the accused Shameem to civil hospital at noon for medical check-up. They were stuck in completing the medical formalities when Shameem requested for access to toilet. Cops took him to the toilet located in emergency section from where the accused jumped out of the window. The police station was informed and the police across the State were alerted.

Sources say that Shameen worked in a tea shop in Kaliyar & was staying for in a rented house. The police is interrogating the acquaintances of the accused in Kaliyar. In the past too, many such instances have occurred which have put khaki to shame. Eight years ago, the aides of the jewel thief Angrez Singh had attacked the police van of the cops and succeeded in absconding.
