A one-day seminar on relevance of Ayurveda in today’s perspective was organised by Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad in the Convention Hall of Rishikul Ayurvedic College on Tuesday. Here they reiterated the fact that Ayurveda, an ancient way of treatment, is  a gift of India  to the world. The hall was jam packed with the students who asked queries to be answered by the experts present.

Presiding over the seminar as the chief guest, director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Rishikesh, Dr Raj Kumar said that Ayurveda’s importance can hardly be over-estimated.

However, he said in the same breath that Ayurveda has been withering due to the Govt and others not giving it the importance it deserves. “More research is needed in the field of the particular branch of medical science in sync with the ancient texts to bring it at par to the other prevalent systems  like Allopathy,” he said, adding that the students  should be motivated to play a major role in  taking Ayurveda onto the world stage.

Speaking to The Pioneer, the director said that the reason behind Ayurveda taking a back stage vis-a-vis Allopathy is  that while the latter is known to give instant relief through medicines and surgeries Ayurveda, on the other  hand, is a slow process. “However, Ayurveda cures diseases from the roots. The Rishis and Munis of yore did not have students to propagate the science which the modern colleges have and can do a lot to  revive  the hoary Vedic science,” he said. Stressing on its revival, he said that the modern medical equipment must be used to implement the therapeutic technique. “This would help it get firmly established  on  the international platform,” said the director.

When asked about the unrest amongst the sanitation workers at AIIMS campus in Rishikesh, the director said, “The present contract with workers body has been finished and their performance was far from satisfactory. The management has full rights to bar the worker from working if he does not work the way he should. We have given the contract to another organisation. It is only a handful of miscreants who are trying to create the trouble. The sanitation would soon be back on track in the hospital.”

Notably, the sanitation workers burnt effigy of the director in Rishikesh while he was speaking at the seminar in Haridwar.
