Three cases of narcotics smuggling being registered in two months since a regular police station came up at Tyuni in the Chakrata region appear to have justified the long standing demand for establishment of a police station in the region to maintain law and order.
.It is pertinent to mention here that grappling with various forms of crimes including narcotics smuggling for at least two decades, the locals of the Chakrata region had demanded a regular police station be set up to replace the revenue police that had allegedly failed to contain crimes continuing in the region with impunity. After sitting on the demand for years, the state government finally stepped in, releasing an order to clear the decks for setting up the police station on December 15 2016, though after doing flip flops.
While the state was under the President’s Rule the administration under the Governor Krishan Kant Paul had decided to open a regular police station there. However, the Harish Rawat government on reinstatement had withdrawn the order, restoring the duty of policing to revenue police. But inexplicably, the state government had done u-turn and released a government order, paving the way for the setting up of the regular police station. The long-awaited police station started functioning from December 18, 2016 from the irrigation department’s guest house.
Tyuni police station in-charge Rakesh Shah said that three cases of narcotics smuggling were reported and three accused were arrested under appropriate sections of IPC. “Police seized around 1.500 kg hashish in all from them and they were sent to jail. Police are extra vigilant in the vulnerable region sharing boundary with Himachal Pradesh. We are convinced, given the evidences, that the narcotics were being smuggled from Himachal Pradesh to be transported to Dehradun, Bareilly or some other places in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh through Tyuni. Checking drives are being conducted regularly and those crossing the check post are being monitored and in case of persons acting suspiciously or when we receive tip offs, they are thoroughly frisked,” he said. He further informed that one sub-inspector, eight constables and four home guards have been deputed to man the police station at Tyuni along with one jeep and a driver.
