2nd phase of tele counselling session by CBSE ends

PNS

In the second phase of tele-counseling session of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which ended on Saturday, more calls were made by the worried parents than the students. The CBSE counselors term it as the clear indication of unnecessary interference by parents in the lives of their children.

The second phase of tele counseling also called post examination counseling session started on May 21 after the declaration of the results of the class X and XII board examinations. The designated counselor of CBSE, Dr Sona Kaushal Gupta informed that she received up to 30 calls a day during the second phase and more than 70 per cent calls were made by the anxious parents.

The parents wanted the counselors to guide them about what stream their wards should take, process of reevaluation of marks and what college and University they should send their wards to. “The calls clearly highlighted that the parents are calling the shots when it comes to decision making. I realised that most of the parents were not even letting their children to speak about their future plan and career.

Many a times the parents disconnected the phone when I insisted to talk to the students,’’ she said. The certified counselor of CBSE said that parents tend to ignore the advice of taking their wards into confidence while deciding about their future which means that the students have to carry the load of their parent’s ambitions.

“I received a call from a class X students who sounded very low and didn’t want to face his parents as his score was low. The grading pattern adopted by the CBSE in class X examination has failed to reduce stress of performing well in the examination as they are under pressure to get good grades now. Nothing has changed only grades have taken the place of marks,’’ she added.
