Wily IPS and worried Minister
likely resurrection of an IPS on the piggyback of a Cabinet minister has triggered curiosity among the law-enforcers of the State. He is all set to become SSP of one of the plain districts of Uttarakhand, though the Chief Minister Harish Rawat is yet to seal the appointment. However, as the deal was struck in Delhi the formal announcement is a matter of time. The insiders say that the sitting SSP has refused to fulfill his promises made to the minister during his appointment.
Now, he is acting whimsically, trampling upon the minister’s instructions, appropriating everything to himself, refusing to share the pie with his former mentor. Seeing things moving from bad to worse, the wily IPS approached the minister and flaunted a lucrative, reciprocal offer of give and take to the worried minister. Fed-up with the incumbent SSP throwing tantrums and even browbeating him, the minister agreed to take the matter to the Chief Minister to swap him for the recalcitrant. The insiders say the IPS has agreed to adequately grease his and others’ palms while assuring that he would not overreach himself like the mercurial and over-greedy incumbent.
Dehradun, long deemed as the hub of school education, besides being a gateway to the queen of hills Mussoorie, is ceasing to fascinate any longer principally because of on- the road ordeal the people suffer. Traffic has developed a habit to come to a grinding halt off and on, thanks to the nonchalance and, worse, mismanagement of the district police. The bureaucrats are now per force leaving for lunch around 12.30 pm instead of the previous 1.30 pm in anticipation of mile-long traffic pileup.
The students are made to sweat all their ways back home from the schools as the vehicles get stuck bumper to bumper. Apparently, to ease things for them, SSP has taken a wonderfully innovative decision- no vehicle would be allowed to be parked on the footpaths between 1 pm to 3 pm-the period of time the little ones return home. Things are happening right as the cops are vigilant on important roads like EC Road, Subhash Road, Rajpur Road, Chakrata Road and Inder Road to enforce the order. But the nub of the matter is that save for the two hours, the vehicles can be parked along the footpaths at the sweet will of their owners. Now, the order would ensure the footpaths, the refuge of the pedestrians in the accident- prone city notorious for rash and drunk driving, being almost perpetually encroached upon.
