A clean slate

JASKIRAN CHOPRA

The New Year is here. With its promises, its challenges and its hopes. Sometimes one feels a little intimidated by the arrival of the New Year. There is something that tells you that you did not fully utilise the year that has gone by. May be you needed to put in more work or devote more time to your loved ones, do a bit to nourish your talents, take out a little more time for yourself. Maybe all these and a few things more. There is some regret or the other in each one’s heart. None of us can actually manage to do all that we wish to in any one year. loose ends always remain.

What I think is that rather than setting goals that have to be met within a given period of time, we should aim at keeping our minds clear about what we wish to achieve. As they say, dreams and wishes do not have expiry dates! In case they take longer to fulfil, we should not feel disheartened. They cannot be always bound by deadlines. Whatever is close to your heart and you wish to attain it, let it take its time and it will come to you. Just keep making the efforts required to bring it into your life. As it is rarely that we get such things without any efforts on our part. However, I have seen that when we pursue something too hard, it begins to elude us. It is like catching a butterfly. We must be quiet and patient while pursuing things we long for.

The New Year can only give us a fresh, clean slate to write upon. It cannot work wonders without our striving for our goals. The wonders have to be achieved by us. It can give us new opportunities but we have to be ready to use these opportunities.

The old year goes away, bidding goodbye like a friend whom we are sorry to part with. We let it go reluctantly , trying to make the most of it during the last few days of December. Till the time it is December, one gets the feeling that one may still be able  to fulfil some promises one had made to oneself and others in the beginning of the year. But as soon as the new year dawns, those possibilities are all taken away from us. We have to begin anew, strengthening our old resolutions, making new ones and giving ourselves fresh hope and cheer. The new year is like a stranger and we approach it gingerly, introducing ourselves to it, trying to shake hands with it. Gradually, we get well-acquainted with it and begin taking it for granted as we did the older year . It is surprising how we forget the year gone by and also forget our regrets of what we had left undone in that year. That is fine. It’s human nature. But the secret to realising your dreams and goals is that they should remain with you and make you work towards them, whatever the year. If you only dream and do not work to attain your dream, it is next to impossible that you will ever attain it.

Each day counts. Each moment matters. How your day is shaped or planned will tell you how your year will end up looking. Every day of the year  is like a building block that will contribute to the structure you will have by the end of the year or years. So forget the dates and just keep travelling carefully on the path of your dreams, step by step, day by day.  All years are the same. They turn soon from being new to old. But what matters is how bright your dream shines in your mind and heart. How serious you are to achieve your goals, how dedicated you are to your relationships, how true you are to yourself and how well you value the preciousness of life. Celebrating the New Year is well and good but do not begin taking it lightly as soon as a few days go by.

life cannot be divided into years but it is also true that the new year is a gentle reminder that time is flying and we must utilise it as best as we can. So that the regrets get fewer with each passing year. And the dreams realised get greater in number.A clean slate
